SMALL SCALE WIND POWER Wind is the movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. Wind is produced by variations of temperature,. as hot air rises and cool air is drawn in to fill the gap. Wind turbines use the lift created by the wind to turn aerodynamically designed blades which turn a shaft which turns a generator to produce electricity. Wind turbines need to be located in areas where the wind speeds are as constant as possible and where the wind is not obstructed by nearby buildings. Many urban areas are not suitable for wind turbines and The Energy Saving Trust does not recommend installing a domestic small scale wind turbine in areas with wind speeds of less than 5 metres per second. Wind speeds of less than 5 metres per second are unlikely to provide a cost effective source of electricity. Use the Energy Saving Trust wind predictor to see if your house is suitable. |
