Sustainable Drainage Systems
Flooding in recnt years has highlighted the importance of effective solutions to manage floods.The increase in the amount of paving in urban areas has increased the speed of water run off into sewers and drains after rainfall. Sustainable drainage systems slow down (or attenuate) the speed of run off. Measures to attenuate rainwater run off include green roofs,permeable paving and land drains.Planning legislation (The Town and Country Planning(General Permitted Development)(Amendment)(No2)(England)Order 2008 requires that any hard surface of more than 5m2, such as a patio or parking area will only be permitted development if the surface is made of propous material or provision is made for run off to a "permeable or porous area or surface within the curtilage of the dwelling house".
